The islands of Okinawa were once known as the Ryukyu Kingdom. The kingdom was a pioneer in trading well before Europe's Age of Discovery, carrying out trade activities far and wide. Starting with tributary trading, the kingdom extended its role into intermediary trading and flourished as an East Asian trading hub, connecting Southeast Asia, Japan, China and Korea. For hundreds of years the people of Okinawa have sailed the seas and traded on a global scale.
